The
big question on everyone's minds was how many people would
show up for the Komen Arkansas Race in the rain? Having
never had to answer that question before, planners went
forward with the race's biggest registration in
Arkansas
' history. Over 38,000 participants were registered by
race morning. And another nearly 300 registered race
day. Race morning was wet and misting as workers put up
tents and placed food and goodies for a questionable crowd.
By the time the gun went off for the 5 K, the rain had
subsided and approximately 25,000 people came to downtown
Little Rock
to "cross the bridges for the cure"! The
question has now been answered. Rain or shine, people in
Arkansas
will run for the cure.
Over
1800 survivors participated in the survivor parade following
the color guard and a pristine pink mustang convertible
donated for the day with the Honorary Survivor chair and other
survivors aboard. Marching to the tunes of
the Happy Tymes Jazz Band, the survivors were greeted by
friends and family along the route. The Survivor
luncheon followed the award ceremony where survivors and their
guests were treated to the music of the Top of the Rock
Chorus.
The
Komen Arkansas race committee deemed the event a tremendous
success. More sponsors than ever before participated and
plan to return. The Family Fun walk crossed the bridges
for the first time and added to the day's excitement.
Plans are under way for the 2005 race on Oct. 22.
